Tuesday Tunesday: In Memoriam

Happy (last) Tunesday of 2016, friends! 2016 has been an especially difficult year for the music industry. Heavy sigh. To close out this year, let’s pay homage to a few artists we’ve lost who have inspired us along the way.

Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to get through this thing called life!

Prince was more than an iconic, musical genius. Prince was and will always be a man who pushed boundaries and redefined what it means to be a man and what it means to be Black. Prince lived outside of the confines that cage many individuals, and he empowered so many to be their authentic selves. Prince embodied what Kermit Says… hopes to encourage: be you, do you, love you all ways, always. We are thankful for the man and his message. He made hit after hit after hit, so choosing just one song was practically impossible. That’s why I’m sharing one of my favorite performances: Super Bowl XLI. It’s a bit fuzzy, but it’s worth it. Get ready to have a good time!

David Bowie. The man. The myth. The legend. What is there to say about Mr. Bowie, the man who fell to the earth? David Bowie transcended music. Like Prince, Bowie was ahead of his time. A creative genius who changed the face of music, gender expression, and fashion, Bowie stood in his truth and gave us permission to do the same. Thank you, Mr. Bowie. We honor you with one of my favorites, Golden Years. May you never be forgotten.

George Michael gave us hip shakes, smooth love songs, and bubbly pop hits. He gave us faith, freedom, and most importantly, he gave us my favorite Christmas song. Can you tell I couldn’t choose just one song? Michael faced a number of challenges and overcame them all. He showed the world that if you want to change your situation, you can do just that!
